A gunman shot and wounded by Milwaukee police after he refused officers' orders to drop his weapon has died, a Milwaukee County medical examiner official said Thursday.
The gunman was identified by Milwaukee police as Donnell L. Carter, 39, who was released from federal custody in 2012 after serving 10 years for a drug trafficking charge. He was on federal supervision when the shooting occurred, Sgt. Mark Stanmeyer said.
The two officers were responding just before 2 a.m. Thursday to a report of a fight at a gas station parking lot at W. Burleigh St. and N. Sherman Blvd. when they heard gunshots. They looked down Burleigh and saw the suspect holding a handgun.
