An off-duty police officer responding to an automobile ad on Craigslist fatally shot one of two men who tried to rob him when he showed up to buy the car on Monday in Queens, according to the police.

A manhunt was underway on Tuesday for the second suspect, who fled in a white BMW, the police said. Officials could not immediately provide a description of the suspect.

The Fire Department said it responded to a 911 call for a person shot around 10:36 p.m. at 177-39 145th Avenue in Springfield Gardens, a neighborhood bordering Kennedy International Airport. The wounded person, who was one of the suspects, was transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in critical condition and died there, the police said.
