Overview

One of two brothers being sought in a woman's death Saturday night died hours later in a shootout with law enforcement officers near the Olympic Training Center east of downtown Colorado Springs, authorities said.

The second suspect was arrested without incident, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office said.

The Sheriff's Office identified the men as Demetrius Mac Moore, 40, and Daniel Lee Moore, 32. Authorities have not released the name of the man who shot at officers and then was killed by return fire, but Daniel Moore had been booked into the county jail, records showed.

Deputies received a call just before 11 p.m. of a shooting on the 4900 block of Brant Road in the Security area, where they found a woman with gunshot wounds, the Sheriff's Office said. The woman, whose name, age and address have not been released, was taken to a hospital, where she died.

An alert was issued for the brothers, warning officers that the pair was armed and dangerous and that they had split up. Tips led Colorado Springs police officers and deputies to a Chelton Road location in southeast Colorado Springs and to another location in the Knob Hill area near East Platte Avenue and North Union Boulevard.

At Platte and Union around 3:45 a.m., officers confronted one of the suspects, who was armed with a handgun and fired at least one shot at officers. Police officers and deputies returned fire, killing the man, the Sheriff's Office said.

A neighbor who lives two blocks from where the shootout happened said she heard more than a dozen shots during a 15-minute period. The neighbor, who declined to give her name, said she heard 10 shots fired within the first couple minutes. The gunfire ceased for about five minutes, she said, before four more shots were fired over the next couple minutes.

After that, no more shots were heard.
