Overview

Police shot and killed a 28-year-old Atlanta man, Dearian Bell, following a domestic disturbance call Monday night, September 21, 2020.

According to the GBI, preliminary information indicates that at about 7:25 p.m., a 911 call was placed about a domestic disturbance on Cassanova Street in Atlanta. When officers arrived, they observed Bell, of Atlanta, and his wife inside a vehicle.

Police say at some point, Bell retrieved a firearm from the vehicle and exited the vehicle. Officers say for about 12 minutes, Bell held the firearm and walked around the area ignoring verbal commands to put the gun down.  At one point, police say Bell advanced toward an Atlanta Police officer. At that time, the officer fired her weapon, striking Bell. 

Officers rendered aid to Bell at the scene. He was transported to a local area hospital where he was pronounced dead. 

No officers were injured during the incident.
