Overview

Darryl Tyree Williams, a 32 year-old Black man, was pronounced dead at a hospital January 17, 2023 after during an attempt to arrest him, police say Williams was shocked three times and eventually handcuffed by officers in southeast Raleigh. 

A police report says officers observed an open container of alcohol and marijuana in a parked car as Williams was in the driver's seat.

Police in North Carolina released footage on Friday February 10, 2023, showing officers use a stun gun on Williams, who had told officers he had heart issues. At one point the man, who died about an hour later, was held on the ground by officers as he was shocked.

Six officers were put on administrative leave amid an investigation by the Raleigh Police Department's Internal Affairs Unit. The State Bureau of Investigation is also conducting a probe.
