A 48-year-old man is dead after being detained by police during a residential disturbance call in a Phoenix neighborhood early Sunday morning.

Sgt. Jonathan Howard said the man called police numerous times around 6 a.m. from the area of 39th Avenue and Orangewood.

Howard said he told dispatchers he was having some sort of medical problem.

Howard added his statements weren't making sense to the dispatchers who, at the time, thought he may have been hallucinating.

While officers were still enroute to the scene, additional calls came from the neighborhood reporting a man causing a disturbance by blowing a car horn and screaming.

Witnesses also told police the man threw a lawn ornament through a window of a home and damaged another resident's property prior to police arriving, said Howard.

Howard said police were trying  to talk to the man when he took a swing at one of the officers.

After a brief struggle, police got the man in custody. He stopped breathing a moment later, Howard said.

The man was taken to a local hospital where he died.
