Overview

A Rialto police officer shot and killed Christopher Gutierrez, 44, inside a Rialto home after he charged at the officer with a knife, authorities said.

Police were responding to a domestic disturbance call at a Rialto house on the 100 block of East Home Avenue on Friday at about 11:30 p.m., the Rialto Police Department said in a news release. A woman living at the home told police her brother was creating a disturbance and was believed to be armed with a weapon.

With officers on the way, the woman remained on the phone with dispatchers, police said. She told the dispatcher her brother was now at her bedroom door.

Capt. Anthony Vega said five Rialto police officers responded to the home.

While officers approached the home, police said the suspect exited the front door and charged at an officer with a knife.

The officer shot at the man, who was struck at least once, police said. Officers tried to provide life saving measures at the scene until paramedics transported the man to a local hospital.

Gutierrez was pronounced dead at the hospital.
