In January 2018, LAPD officers shot and killed 22-year-old Christian Escobedo in the El Sereno community of Los Angeles, California. Police were responding to earlier reports that two mena were sleeping behind a vehicle. When they encountered the two men, officer opened fire, killing Escobedo, while the other man fled. Authorities say a handgun was recovered.
As of February 2018, it was still unclear what led to the officers opening fire.
In January 2019, family and friends of Escobedo held a vigil and protest to mark the one-year anniversary of his death.
