Overview

A man shot and killed by police officers outside of a west Eugene middle school was identified Saturday.

Charles Frederick Landeros, 30, of Eugene was killed Friday after Eugene police officers responded to a custody dispute at Cascade Middle School around 10:30 a.m. Friday, according to a press release from the Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team.

As two police officers were escorting Landeros from the building, Landeros allegedly pulled out a gun and struggled with the officers, police said. During the struggle, Landeros was shot by officers and died at the scene.

The press release did not include the names of the officers involved in the shooting.

The shooting happened just outside of the school’s front doors. No students, staff or officers were harmed, but the shooting caused Cascade and two neighboring schools, Willamette High School and Malabon Elementary School, to lock students in their classrooms temporarily. Students at Cascade were able to reunite with their parents about three hours after the shooting.
