Overview

25-year-old Catherine Gomez allegedly tried to stab her mother and was fatally shot by an officer responding to a call at their residence Sunday night in Long Beach’s Bluff Heights neighborhood.

At around 9:40 p.m., officers responded to a call about a family disturbance in the 200 block of Molino Avenue, Long Beach police said. When they arrived, officers found it was a mother and daughter disputing, but no crime had occurred and they left the scene, police said.

About 40 minutes later, the mother called police and reported that “her daughter was armed with a knife and was threatening her,” police said in a statement.

When the officer arrived at the location again, he heard an altercation inside the home and entered it through a broken front window, police said. When he was inside, he saw the daughter was armed with a utility knife, according to police.

“He observed the daughter attempting to stab her mother and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” police said.

The officer called for paramedics and he began life-saving measures on the daughter, police said, but when Fire Department officials arrived they determined she was dead.

The mother had minor injuries that did not require medical attention, police said.
