Overview 
The shooting unfolded after police were called to an armed robbery Thursday night and saw a masked gunman leaving an auto parts store on the city's northwest side, according to police.
A foot chase ensued during which the gunman fired at pursuing officers, who returned fire. A 38-year-old officer was wounded, Milwaukee police Chief Edward Flynn said Thursday.
The round hit the officer's ballistic vest, and he has since been treated at a hospital for his injuries and released.
