Overview

A man is dead after being shot by an officer after a brief pursuit Tuesday night in east Bakersfield.

Police spokesman Sgt. Gary Carruesco said around 7 p.m., two officers were in the area of Pacific and Haley, looking for a suspect wanted in connection with an attempted homicide that occurred in December on Union Avenue.

Officers then saw a man driving a vehicle matching the description of the wanted suspect. When officers attempted to stop him, the driver fled and eventually crashed on the overpass on Highway 178 near Niles Street and Alta Vista.

According to police, the suspect got out of his car and ran from the officers. An officer believed the suspect pointed a gun them, and the second officer shot the suspect.

It's unclear if the suspect fired at the officers, but the officers weren't hurt. Investigators found a handgun at the scene.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity will be released later by the coroner's office, and police didn't say if this suspect is indeed the man wanted for the attempted homicide from December.

The officer who fired his weapon will be placed on routine administrative leave pending a review of the incident.
