Anthony Trice Jr., 24, was shot after police say they caught him breaking into a Checkers in Clinton. He also was a suspect in burglaries at a Wendy’s and a Popeyes nearby.
Officers responded to a burglary alarm at Checkers in the 8800 block of Woodyard Road at 3:40 a.m.. They found Trice there at a safe.
The officers set up a perimeter around the restaurant and called to Trice to surrender. One officer said he saw that he was armed and warned the other officers.
Trice went out of a side door with the weapon in his hand and pointed it at at least two officers, police say. The officers ordered him to drop, and one of the officers fired a shot, hitting him once in the leg.
A handgun and screwdriver were recovered near where he fell, Stawinski said. A spent shell casing from the suspect's weapon also was found at the scene.
The officers rendered aid at the scene. Then, Trice died at a hospital. He lived on Piscataway Road in Clinton.
No officers were injured.
A camera on a police cruiser captured the incident, and the department plans to release the footage what they can, Stawinski said.
