Overview

It started with an errant football hitting a police patrol car early on the morning of Dec. 22, and it ended with the death of a 29-year-old Bronx man.

The police have said the man, who was being arrested for disorderly conduct, died of an asthma attack. But his family yesterday accused the police of choking him to death, and the Medical Examiner's office indicated that the cause of death was probably asphyxiation.

The Medical Examiner will need another week or more to determine whether the death was caused directly by force applied by police officers or by a previous health condition or drugs.
