Overview

Anthony Eduardo Pacheco, a 37-year-old Latino male, died Monday, March 30, after being shot by law enforcement near 201 S. Reservoir St. in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Anthony Pacheco was walking toward the officer and refused orders to drop the sword, sheriff’s Lt. Derrick Alfred said. Pacheco had purchased the sword within the last month or so.

Pacheco had argued with his 41-year-old brother and attacked him with a sword while at San Antonio and Monterey avenues, Alfred said, adding that the brother was cut below his right ear. He didn’t know what the argument was about.

The brother called 911.

An officer saw Pacheco running, got out of his car and detained him at gunpoint, Alfred said.

“He initially complies,” Alfred said.

Pacheco then pulled the sword from his waistband and pointed it at the officer, Alfred said. The officer tried to back away and ordered him to drop the sword, he added.

Pacheco advanced toward the officer who fired four rounds, Alfred said. He doesn’t know yet how many rounds hit Pacheco, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
