Overview 
Andre Lavance Rippy, 39, was fatally shot by police after he pointed a weapon at officers near 13th Avenue and Thomas Road, Phoenix police said.
Police had responded to two separate reports of shots fired in the areas of 29th Avenue and Bethany Home Road and 27th and Highland avenues shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday.
Sgt. Mark Tovar, a Phoenix police spokesman, said officers suspected the man involved was driving a black Mustang.
Officers found the car at about 3 a.m., police said. Tovar said Rippy refused to stop for police before he continued driving into Ahwatukee and then the Scottsdale area. Officers were unable to stop the car with spikes.
Tovar said Rippy attempted to steal a different vehicle near an off-ramp by the loops 101 and 202 in Tempe, but the woman driving refused to give up her car.
