A gunman near North Carolina Central University was shot and killed by police late Monday, prompting a campus lockdown for three hours, Reuters reported.

The lockdown was enacted at 10:15 p.m. after a suspect in a current investigation in Durham, North Carolina ran towards the college, according to a statement from Chancellor Debra Saunders-White.

Details of the suspect's criminal investigation are unknown.

After campus police officers discovered the suspect hiding in a wooded area, he challenged them with a gun, prompting officers to shoot at him, said Police Chief Timothy Bellamy. The man was not a student at the school and his name has not been released.

The lockdown was lifted at 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Classes were relocated for the day and a town hall meeting was organized.
