Overview

A man who died after police deployed a lethal subject control spray to detain him over the weekend was identified Tuesday as Thomas Williams, 34, of Fort Lauderdale.

Fort Lauderdale police said officers were working an event Saturday at Carter Park when they were told that a man was exhibiting abnormal behavior.

The officers found Williams a short time later in the middle of traffic just outside the park on West Sunrise Boulevard, authorities said.

Police said officers tried to detain Williams under Florida's Baker Act, but a struggle ensued and a non-lethal subject control spray was deployed.

Police said Williams was taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where he died.

The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an investigation into the death.
