Overview

The investigation into the August 19 shooting on Winters Lane led detectives to a home in the unit block of Roberts Avenue in Precinct 1/Wilkens on the morning of August 28. Tactical officers, including Officer Jason Schneider, entered the home to serve a warrant and encountered several subjects. There was an exchange of gunfire and the officer and the suspect were both shot.

The man suspected of fatally shooting Baltimore County Police Officer Jason Schneider died at Shock Trauma on August 28. He has been identified as Tevon Smith, 25, of the unit block of Roberts Avenue, 21228. Tevon Smith is the only suspect believed to have shot Officer Schneider.

All subjects inside the home at the time of the warrant service were detained.

Preliminary investigation has shown that Officer Schneider's vest stopped several rounds, but that one round travelled underneath his vest, striking him in the back.

A Baltimore woman says if police had simply knocked, rather than barging into her home during a raid, the lives of a police officer and her nephew might have been spared.

Baltimore County police had a no-knock warrant to raid the home Tonya Smith on Aug. 28 in a search for her son, Rasheed Stanford, now 17, in connection with a nearby shooting, The Baltimore Sun reports. Stanford wasn't there, but another person in the house tried to flee as Smith and her young daughter hid under a bed. The chaos and ensuing shots fired killed Smith's nephew, Tevon Smith, 25, and a veteran police officer, Jason Schneider.
