Overview

A man shot by a Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office deputy at the lakefront died Tuesday, according to the county medical examiner's office.

Terry Williams, 19, was pronounced dead at Froedtert Hospital, where he had been on life support, and an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, a medical examiner's official said.

Williams and Paula McEwen, 23, were shot following a pursuit that began about 7:40 p.m. Sunday after Williams failed to obey a traffic sign. He was driving an Audi SUV and heading north on N. Lincoln Memorial Drive near E. Water Tower Road, according to sheriff's officials and video.

A deputy in a sheriff's vehicle attempted to stop the Audi because of a traffic infraction. Video posted on Facebook shows Williams did not stop and drove the SUV onto the median.

Deputy Michael Truax, 32, who was assigned to foot duty on the lakefront Sunday, was on the median and fired into the Audi several times, the video shows. It is unclear from the video if the SUV was traveling directly toward the deputy.

After Truax fired into the Audi, the vehicle swerved back onto the road and struck another car before stopping. Deputies surrounded the vehicle, ordering people out at gunpoint.

The Facebook video shows that a third person, a man, was in the back seat. Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. did not mention the man in the back seat at a brief news conference Monday.

McEwen suffered a wound to her shoulder and is expected to survive.

Truax, who was hired in August, was put on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in such cases
