Overview

Tarika Wilson was killed when a Lima Police SWAT team raided her rental home to arrest her boyfriend on drug charges, according to The New York Times.Officers bashed in the front door and entered with guns drawn, said neighbors who saw the raid. She had her youngest son, Sincere, in her arms when she was shot by Sgt. Joseph Chavalia. Sincere, who was 14 months old, was shot in the shoulder and hand leading to a finger being amputated but survived.

Legal Action

In August 2008, a Lima, Ohio jury acquitted police officer Joseph Chavalia of involuntary manslaughter. In 2011, a judge approved a $2.5 million wrongful death settlement in the fatal shooting of Tarika Wilson.
