Overview

A Trumbull County grand jury has decided a Warren police officer was only defending himself when he shot and killed a man while investigating an accident in October.

The grand jury found no wrongdoing on the part of Officer Michael Krafcik, who shot and killed Taemarr Walker in October, according to a press release distributed Thursday by Trumbull County Prosecutor Dennis Watkins.

In the incident, Krafcik was attending to a single-vehicle crash on Risher Road when a car driven by Walker approached, drove off the road and got stuck in a ditch, according to the report.

According to the investigation, Krafick approached the crashed Red Pontiac that contained Taemarr Walker and his girlfriend Regan Jelks. Krafcik saw a rifle in the back seat of the car.

According to the release, Walker lunged toward the rifle, but did not touch it. Then after the officer ordered Walker between 15 to 20 times to put his hands up and not move, Walker lunged under the driver’s seat and grabbed a handgun. That’s when Krafcik shot Walker five times, killing him.

The tow truck driver who was at the scene witnessed the whole thing and backed up the officer’s story.

There is no police-car videotape of the shooting death of Taemarr L. Walker, 24, who died after being shot by a Warren police officer early Saturday.

Police car 78, which media outlets have reported was being used by Patrolman Michael Krafcik, is not equipped with video capabilities, Traci Timko Rose, assistant Warren law director, said Monday.

Other police cars responded quickly to the officer, but the 1:50 a.m. shooting already had occurred by the time they arrived, Timko Rose said.

Rollison’s 24-year-old son, Ricky, was shot and killed Saturday morning at a gas station on Tod Avenue.

According to Warren Safety Director Enzo Cantalamessa, the conflict began on October 20 when 24-year-old Taemarr Walker was shot and killed during an altercation with a Warren police officer. Someone’s posts on social media websites upset Walker’s family.

Investigators said Walker’s relatives accused people at a local bar of celebrating Taemarr’s death. Taemarr’s 26-year-old brother, TaShawn, is accused of opening fire outside of the bar.

Rollison’s sister said her brother, Ricky, identified TaShawn as “his” killer before he died, but police are trying to figure out a connection.
