Overview

38-year-old Sergio Alvarado-Morales was killed by Reno police responding to an automobile accident. Shortly after 5PM January 25, 2016, Reno police were called to a multiple-vehicle chain reaction crash in the area of McCarran and Smithridge. Witnesses told officers about a man who had been involved in the crash who was holding a knife to his throat, and another person reportedly trying to disarm him. Witnesses say they felt threatened by him.

Police say officers found Alvarado-Morales with the knife and talked to him, trying to get him to put it down. They then used a Taser to subdue him, and when that didn't work, he and officers fought, leading to one officer firing his handgun multiple times at him. Alvarado-Morales was taken to Renown Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
