Overview

The man killed in a Hudson officer-involved shooting Sunday was a Case Western Reserve University student from Dubai. 

Tuesday authorities confirmed Saif Nasser Mubarak Alameri, 26, died of a gunshot wound to the head. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation said he was a United Arab Emirate citizen studying law at Case. People who knew Alameri said they can't believe what happened.

"Every time I saw him in the hallway he'd say, 'Hi' and ask me how I'm doing," said Alameri's neighbor, Katelyn Gibson.

"It's very upsetting. He was from Dubai. He was a good neighbor," said another woman.

The woman who lived in the apartment above Alameri didn't wish to share her name, but she said his family still lived in Dubai and that Alameri came to Cleveland to go to school.

"We were friendly and it's very upsetting what happened. He was a really good guy and he was interested in law school here at Case, so it's upsetting to hear that would happen to someone like that," she said. 

The Summit County Medical Examiner confirms Alameri was shot following a struggle with a Hudson Police Officer in the 3200 block of Hudson Aurora. Ohio State Highway Patrol Troopers first responded to the scene around 2:45 p.m. Sunday after getting multiple 911 calls of a car crash and an erratic driver on the turnpike. 

Police said the driver eventually crashed near the 480 exit before fleeing the scene.

"I just saw a horrible accident in front of me," said one caller.

Another caller said the man got out of his car and took off.

"He's running in the eastbound direction on the southbound lanes. The car's overturned," he said.

Hudson police said there was a scuffle in the woods and an officer opened fire, killing Alameri.

The news stunned the woman who lived right across the hall from him. 

"(He was) so nice. He would have friends over and they would always say hi to me and things like that, so there was never a bad interaction between me and him," said Gibson.

The police officer who fatally shot Alameri when he allegedly fled from the scene of the crash has been placed on paid administrative leave. He was taken to Akron City Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is continuing to investigate.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent out this statement:

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation with the UAE Embassy in Washington, D.C., is following up the investigation into the painful incident that led to the death of an Emirati student in Ohio.

"In light of this follow up, and after details of the painful incident are clarified by the authorities, the Ministry will issue a more comprehensive statement at a later time," said Mohammed Mer Al Raisi, Under-Secretary at the Ministry.

Legal Action

Officer Ryan Doran returned to duty after a Summit County grand jury cleared him in August 2017 of wrongdoing.
