Overview

SPD, investigating the case per police shooting protocol, says about 5:18PM December 21, 2016, Reno Police officers were in the 400 Block of Vine Street in Reno near the Gold Dust West investigating a person suspected of committing a recent burglary and arson at the Nugget in Sparks.

There was an altercation involving the suspect, 38-year-old Raymond Salaiza of Washoe County, plus a vehicle, and police. Two officers were hit with the car and sustained minor injuries. Shots were fired and Salaiza was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

REMSA was initially dispatched to a vehicle-versus-pedestrian accident. Then the Reno Police department requested two additional ambulances and an ambulance supervisor.

Legal Action

Around January 20, 2018, Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks ruled an officer-involved shooting outside a Reno casino in 2016 was justified. Hicks has released his public report on the December 21, 2016 incident involving the Reno Police Department and 38-year-old Raymond James Salaiz Jr.
