Overview 
Two people are dead after gunfire on White Horse Road in the Berea community turned the seven-lane major thoroughfare into a crime scene at rush hour Friday evening.
An unidentified woman was reportedly involved in an altercation with an unidentified male at about 4:25 p.m. Friday on White Horse Road near its intersection with Lilly Street, the Greenville County Coroner's Office said. As the woman ran across the 6700 block of White Horse Road, the man reportedly shot her, Coroner Parks Evans said.
When the deputies confronted the man, he began shooting at them and the officers returned fire, Evans said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, the Coroner's Office said. The woman was transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead at 5:28 p.m. Friday, Evans said.
The Coroner's Office had not identified the deceased individuals as of early Saturday morning. Autopsies are scheduled for Saturday.
