Overview

Peter John was killed by a Metropolitan Police officer while fleeing with a BB gun in Northeast, D.C. early Monday morning, February 1, 2016.

At around 2 a.m., officials say an MPD officer was on a routine patrol in the 5300 block of Clay Terrace when he saw a man acting strangely. As the officer approached the man, police said the man attempted to run but fell and in the process a weapon was dislodged. According to police, the man did not comply with the officer's commands and as he tried to recover the weapon the officer shot one round, hitting him.

MPD recovered the weapon and later determined that it was a BB gun.

"The subject attempted to flee, but lost his footing and fell. As the suspect fell, a gun dislodged from somewhere on his clothing onto the ground," Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier said.
