Overview

A 39-year-old man was fatally shot on Monday by New York City police officers who were responding to a call about a home invasion taking place in Brooklyn, the police said.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m., officers were called to the home, near the intersection of 78th Street and Quentin Road in the Gravesend neighborhood, the authorities said. Eight people, including an infant, were inside when the man, who was armed with a revolver, entered the three-story, single-family home, police officials said.

When the officers arrived, the man bolted upstairs and escaped through a third-floor window, pushing out an air-conditioning unit in the process, James P. O’Neill, the chief of department, said at a news conference at the scene.

The man descended a fire escape and then scaled a fence on Stillwell Avenue, where he nearly fell on a sergeant and an officer who were on the other side of the fence, Chief O’Neill said. As the man raised the revolver, the chief said, the sergeant and the officer each fired a single shot, with both shots striking the man.
