Overview

A nationwide manhunt for a bank robber accused of killing a Mississippi police officer ended after the suspect was shot and killed during a heist in Arizona, authorities said.

Mario Edward Garnett, 40, went down in a hail of bullets during a shootout with cops after he allegedly held up a Phoenix bank on Saturday morning, authorities said.

Garnett — who was arrested in 2010 for making online threats against President Obama — has been connected to an attempted bank robbery in Atlanta on Dec. 23, officials said. The armed bandit failed to get any money from the bank, but robbed a person at a nearby ATM before he fled.

Hours later, Garnett is accused of robbing a bank in Tupelo, Miss. — where he shot two police officers who approached the vehicle used as a getaway car, officials said.

One cop, Cpl. Kevin (Gale) Stauffer, 38, died from his wounds. His partner, Joseph Maher, 26, was critically injured.
