Overview

The man, 22-year-old Marcus Garner, was killed at around 1 a.m. at the Lake Sweetwater Apartments on Sweetwater Road near Old Norcross Road in unincorporated Lawrenceville.

Gwinnett County Police Sgt. Brian Doan said the incident began when a resident called police to report a suspicious vehicle.

Two responding officers caught up to the car, which had two men and one woman inside. Doan said all three suspects tried to run. The officers quickly caught the woman, 27-year-old Shena Penrose, and took her to Gwinnett County Police headquarters for questioning.

Doan said Garner forced a police officer to the ground. The other officer shot Garner, killing him. Police said Garner had a gun, but did not use it on the police officer.

The second male suspect managed to get away. Police said they believe the shooting is an isolated incident and do not consider the suspect at large, who has not been identified, to be armed and dangerous.

The officer on the ground was knocked out and taken to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he regained consciousness, according to Doan.

The suspects' car was impounded and taken to police headquarters. Doan said investigators are now trying to determine what the suspects were doing and whether they were involved in any criminal activity before police arrived on the scene.

Penrose, the female suspect, was arrested on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear. Police said Garner, the suspect who was killed, had an outstanding warrant for probation violation.
