Overview

Vacaville police shot and killed a Sacramento man Friday afternoon after he allegedly drove into officers during an attempt to escape from a traffic stop. The shooting occurred during a pursuit that was sparked by a reported burglary. Police were called to the Vacaville Walmart shortly before 3:30 p.m. on a report that a man and woman were allegedly stealing televisions in an apparent commercial burglary, according to Lt. John Carli.

Police pursued the suspect vehicle, described as a light-colored sedan with a registration out of Sacramento, east on Interstate Highway 80 and made a traffic stop around a mile east of Leisuretown Road. During the stop, however, the driver, identified later as 21-year-old Lonnie Taylor, of Sacramento, allegedly accelerated backwards and struck officers who were trying to prevent his escape, Carli said.

One officer then fired as he drove forward. The pursuit continued east before the sedan, a 1995 Lincoln MK8, struck the center divider just west of Midway Road and then rear-ended a Honda Odyssey driven by a Dublin man, according to the California Highway Patrol. The Honda then rear-ended a Ford Ranger, according to the CHP.
