An inmate at the D.C. jail has died, as officials work to cool the facility during a heat wave.
NBC4-TV reports that corrections officials say 70-year-old Lester Irby collapsed in the D.C. Central Detention Facility on Thursday.
The station reports that paramedics who responded say he appeared to be suffering a stroke.
Department of Corrections spokeswoman Sylvia Lane says Irby appears to have died of natural causes. She wrote in an email that the department has no reason to believe that there is a correlation between elevated temperatures and the inmate’s death.
But Deborah Golden, an attorney who monitors jail conditions, says Irby’s death is a reminder of poor conditions inside.
The jail houses more than 1,200 people.
