Overview

Durham police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left 21-year-old Lavante Trevon Biggs dead Saturday morning, September 5, 2015. Police received a call about an "armed suicidal male." Officers said they made every effort to try to have him drop his weapon. Hostage negotiators continued to try to get Biggs to cooperate for over half an hour, according to police. Authorities said they began firing at Biggs once he started walking toward the officers. Durham police revealed Thursday that the armed man killed in a police standoff on Sept. 5 was carrying an Airsoft air gun, which officers mistook for a real gun. He was transported to the hospital where he died.

The officers involved in the incident have also been identified as Richard Armstrong, Anthony Cisternas, Landon Harvey, and Jason Holmes.
