The suspect who was shot and killed in a shootout with DeSoto County Sheriff's deputies Wednesday night in Southaven was wanted by Memphis police in connection with a carjacking last week at Ardent Studios.

Police spokeswoman Lt. Karen Rudolph confirmed that the car recovered on the scene of the shooting outside the Kroger in Southaven was the same car stolen last Friday in a carjacking outside the Midtown recording studio.

In that incident, a man told police that as he was getting in his car around 1:30 a.m. in the studio parking lot at 2000 Madison Avenue, an armed man pointed a gun at him and demanded money.

The victim said after he gave the suspect his money, he was forced into his car by the man. He drove the suspect around briefly and then was told to pull over. The suspect then took off with the man's Ford Escape.

Rudolph said the car was recovered Wednesday night on the scene of the shootout in Southaven.

In that incident, two deputies, Sgt. Hunter Garrett and K9 deputy Lee Hutchins, were injured during the shootout.

Garrett was shot in the foot and Hutchins was shot in the chest in an area not protected by his bulletproof vest.

Garrett was released from the Regional Medical Center overnight. Hutchins underwent surgery for damage to his lungs and other organs and remains in intensive care at the hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery, DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco said.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was shot and killed during the shootout. Rasco said the suspect's identity should be available later today.

The shooting began while the two deputies were confronting a robbery suspect at the Kroger behind Heartland Church on Stateline Road near Interstate 55 in Southaven about 9:30 p.m.

District Attorney John Champion said during a midnight press conference that the suspect committed three violent robberies in Horn Lake and Southaven.

Champion said he heard it started with a carjacking in Memphis but could not confirm that information. He said the deputies found a man matching the suspect's description at the Kroger and confronted him. That's when the shooting occurred.

"They were very, very brave," Champion said of the deputies.

The officer-involved shooting will be investigated by the Mississippi Bureau of investigation.
