Overview

Columbus police SWAT officers shot and killed a man early this morning who was suspected of injuring his girlfriend in a shooting on the South Side last night.

The fatal shooting occurred just after midnight at 719 S. 17th St., police said.  Police said Kenneth R. Herring, 50, was killed after five officers fired and struck him multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene, not far from Nationwide Children’s Hospital, at 12:14 a.m. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

That shooting followed another shooting about 9 p.m. yesterday, when Richell Dixon was shot inside a house at 1196 Lockbourne Rd. on the South Side. Herring was wanted in connection with that shooting.

The 50-year-old woman, who police identified as Herring's girlfriend, was taken in critical condition to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center.
