Overview 
Perez allegedly refused commands from officers to drop a knife he was wielding as he approached them at a home. Police were responding to a hung-up 911 call reporting that a man was 'threatening to kill everyone'.
Colon said his cousin had about five near-death experiences in the past, from the car accident and health conditions.
"He, ironically, was born Dec. 25," Colon said. "For him to be taken away from us on Easter, and for what the holiday symbolizes, is also kind of ironic."
Perez was born in Puerto Rico, Colon said, and moved to Lowell when he was around 10 years old.
He loved basketball and baseball, said Colon, who recalled that Perez was a "fantastic" pitcher.
What trumped all was Perez's love for his children.
"He had a lot to live for," Colon said.
