Overview

Family members say the bullet holes on 43-year-old Jose Olivares' home are no way to mark the end of his life.

"We're pretty devastated that this has taken place, and we're just trying to piece together what we don't know why," said Derek Smith, cousin of Olivares.

Houma Police haven't officially said what led to a standoff at Olivares' home, but, by the end of it, he had died after a shooting with police.

Neighbors who live in the area say Olivares was shooting from inside of his home.

"He was always happy to see you, even if you made him mad, he was happy to see you," said Osanna Craig-Olivares, Jose's daughter.

Osanna is not afraid to admit that Olivares fought hard against depression and addiction, most of the time she says he won.

"It's a battle, a lifelong battle, but that's not who he was. When he was him, he was great, and he was happy, and he was loving. He's not just some crazy guy that went on a rampage that's not what it was," said Craig-Olivares.

Osanna will remember her dad as the handyman who was always trying something new. At one point she says he worked at a gator ranch.  Sadly, it's been a while since they talked.

"I was mad at him, and I was stubborn, and I wouldn't talk to him," she said.

Osanna also doesn't know if police or anyone could have done more.  Instead, she wonders if one more message, or call might have changed things.

"I thought I had 30 years to make this right and 30 years turn into coming down on a Wednesday and burying my dad."
