Overview

A deputy-involved shooting in Sandia Park Sunday night ended with one man dead.

Bernalillo County Sheriff Dan Houston held a news conference from the East Area Command Center Sunday detailing the events leading up to the fatal shooting. Houston said John Chavez, 54, was shot at a home at 396 La Madera Road in Sandia Park shortly after 7 p.m.

Six to seven deputies were called to that home at 4:45 pm, after Chavez’s ex-wife called 911 saying that her ex-husband was threatening suicide.

When deputies arrived, Houston said deputies starting negotiating with Chavez. During negotiations Chavez went inside his home and armed himself with a high-powered rifle.

Beasley was standing behind Chavez when he shot him, Williamson said. He did not know whether Beasley used his BCSO-issued pistol or his AR-15 assault-style rifle, and he did not know where the single shot entered Chavez’s body.
