On Saturday, about twenty-four hours after a man was shot and killed by a Nashville police officer, a girl on a scooter pushed herself through a parking lot and past the shooting site.

Across a street from East Nashville’s Cayce Homes public housing, families chatted on porches and more children played, enjoying a rare 65-degree winter day.

But down on the corner, in front of the Family Dollar, three adults stood with fluorescent signs, a reminder of what happened one day prior.

“Justice For Jocques Clemmons,” demanded Josh Martin’s sign. “Black man = Endangered species.”

Clemmons, 31, was shot by Nashville Police Officer Josh Lippert just after 1 p.m. Friday off South 6th Street. Police authorities said Lippert pulled Clemmons over and there were two physical confrontations between the pair. At one point Clemmons had a gun in his hand, refused to drop it when Lippert told him to and continued moving, police said. Lippert believed he was in danger and opened fire, police said. Clemmons was struck twice in the lower back and later died in surgery.
