Overview

Police have identified an armed suspect who was shot and killed while fleeing police Sunday about 9 p.m. in the 2300 block of Broward Road, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

Jarmel Anthony Cosby, 28, was reaching for a gun when he was shot during a foot chase with police, Chief of Investigations Annie Smith said.

The Price Right Food Store in the 10200 block of Lem Turner Road was robbed about 8:30 p.m. by a man with a gun who was later identified as Cosby, Chief of Investigations Annie Smith said. Police said the suspect left the store on foot and headed east on Broward Road where task force officers in an unmarked car less than a mile away saw a man matching the description of the robber about 8:50 p.m.

The three task force members confronted the man and ordered him to surrender but he ran and tried to jump a fence but did not make it.

Officer M.W. Crawford saw the dropped gun and warned Cosby not to reach for it, Smith said. When Cosby went for the weapon, Crawford fired three shots, Smith said. Cosby died at the scene.
