Overview

24 year-old Jaquan Terry was shot and killed during a incident with Raleigh police on Monday morning, August, 22, 2016, officials confirmed. An officer involved sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries from gunshot wounds during the incident.

Just after 11:30 a.m., officers responded to 241 Donald Ross Drive concerning a report of a man with a gun. The man left the area when the first officer arrived on scene but soon reappeared in the street.

The man then took off on foot and the officer gave chase. A second officer arrived on scene and began to chase the man as well.

The gunman, later identified as Jaqwan Julius Terry, 24, of Raleigh, was pronounced dead, police said.

The officers involved, who are assigned to the Field Operations Division, were later identified as B.S. Beausoleil and B.F. Burleson, police said.

Officer Burleson, 29, who was shot in the leg, was hired in July 2009. Officer Beausoleil, 30, was hired in March 2008.

A witness, Ronnie Short, said “I heard five shots. And this is probably 300 feet away from me.”

Short works at Wake Assisted Living. He says he was in the backyard at the time of the shooting.

“I could see at least three cops with their guns pointed and they were shouting ‘put your weapon down!’ They shouted that like three or four times,” Short said.

From his vantage point, Short said couldn’t see the man those officers were pointing their guns at.

The SBI will investigate and provide its findings to the Wake County district attorney.

“In accordance with departmental policy, the officers will be placed on administrative duty during the” investigations, police said in an email.

Raleigh police’s Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an administrative investigation that will focus on departmental policy compliance.

About 50 cruisers could be seen at nearby WakeMed Hospital as reports circulated that a police officer was shot.

Raleigh Police released a 911 call Monday afternoon related to the shooting incident.
