Overview

The search for a suspect in an early morning homicide Friday ended in a fatal police-involved shooting.

At 12:41 a.m., Columbus Police were dispatched on a report of a shooting at an apartment complex in the 1800 block of Fountainview Court on the Far East Side.

Damion D. Wade, 21, was pronounced dead at 12:55 a.m. Witnesses told police that Wade had argued with someone, who shot Wade and fled the scene.

Witnesses said the man laughed after shooting Wade. He left the apartment, but returned a short time later and fired additional shots into Wade’s head and chest.

Tyler Moore, 23, who lives on the block where the shooting occurred, said he woke up at about 12:30 a.m. to the sound of two men arguing in an apartment located somewhere above him. The argument was followed by a woman's scream and what he believed were three gunshots.

“There was something in me, I knew somebody was dead," he said. "It was just weird, lying there, thinking, I just heard somebody die.”

Evidence and witness statements led officers to develop a suspect in the shooting. They passed the information on to SWAT officers, who tracked the suspect to Knollwood Drive, on the East Side, according to police Sgt. Rich Weiner.

SWAT officers were containing the scene just before 11 a.m. when an officer saw a man walk out of a house and down the street. The man, identified by police as 20-year-old Jacquarius M. Robinson, 20,  matched the description of the suspect in the homicide, Weiner said. The officer saw Robinson take a handgun from his waistband and put it in his jacket. When Robinson saw a K-9 unit in a marked cruiser, he ran. The K-9 unit and two other officers chased Robinson to the 1300 block of Knollwood Drive, Weiner said.

Witnesses said they heard the officers yelling for the man to stop running. They then heard gunshots. Robinson was pronounced dead at the scene.

There was a gun found at the scene, police said. It was not clear if Robinson fired any shots. The officers were not injured.

Wade's death is the 71st homicide in Columbus this year.

This is the 14th person shot by police this year and the third person shot to death by police since June.
