A chase suspect was killed by police in Baytown after a lengthy chase out of Beaumont, deputies say.
Views from Air 11 showed that I-10 westbound was shut down near N. Main before 11 a.m. Tuesday. The suspect’s black Mercedes SUV was wrecked alongside the road.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office tells KHOU 11 the chase started when its deputies tried to carry out a traffic stop around 8:49 a.m. The suspect refused to pull over, however, and led authorities westbound into Chambers County and then Baytown.
Once in Baytown, deputies say the suspect tried to hit an officer who was trying to set up a spike strip to stop the speeding SUV.
Eventually the suspect wrecked and then allegedly exchanged gunfire with police. He died at the scene.
DPS Troopers, Jefferson County deputies, Chambers County deputies and Baytown police assisted in the chase.
