Overview

Ismael Lopez, a 29-year-old Latino, was fatally shot by Long Beach police Friday, Aug. 26, near Long Beach Boulevard and 10th Street in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Police were dispatched to an "unknown trouble" call about 8 p.m., according to a Long Beach Police Department news release.

When the initial officer arrived in the area, he was informed by the radio dispatcher about a possible gang-related fight nearby involving several men at Superior Market, officials said. The dispatcher said a person had been shot in the stomach.

The officer drove to the market's parking lot and was directed by witnesses toward a Honda, police said. As the officer approached, he saw two males walking toward the car. The men then saw police and began to run from the area.

At that point, several officers began to chase after the men. Officials said during the pursuit, "the actions of one of the suspects caused one of the pursuing officers to fear for his safety and/or the safety of the other officers and an officer-involved shooting occurred."
