Overview

A person died Monday after a deputy-involved shooting in Catawba County.

The incident happened just after 4 p.m. on the 1100 block of 15th Street NE in Hickory. Officials have not released many details but said the shots were fired during a narcotics investigation.

According to the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, an altercation involving the suspect’s vehicle and an undercover deputy’s vehicle occurred during the investigation. The deputy’s vehicle was struck hard enough to knock the bumper off, officials said.

Shots were then fired by at least one Catawba County deputy, and the suspect crashed a short distance away.

The suspect, who suffered serious injuries, was rushed to an area hospital, where officials said just before 9 p.m. he had died.
