Overview

Humberto Vera-Munoz, 27, died at the scene following the officer-involved shooting in Sparks. 

At around 10:18 p.m., Sparks officers were involved in a shooting at an apartment complex in the 1100 block of 15th Street, a news release from the Sparks Police Department said.

The circumstances that led up to the shooting were unclear as of Thursday afternoon. However, Reno Police Lt. Zack Thew confirmed Thursday afternoon that the incident started with a traffic stop. There was no one else in the car at the time of the shooting, he said. 

Thew also confirmed there were two Sparks officers involved in the incident.As per the Washoe County officer-involved shooting protocol, the Reno Police Department will lead the investigation into the incident.

Thew said there were no other injuries reported to officers or civilians and there was no person outstanding or a threat to the community.

Legal Action

Reno Police, who conducted the investigation into the shooting based on officer-involved shooting protocol, recommended no criminal charges against the Sparks officers, and District Attorney Hicks agreed, saying, "the facts illustrate that both officers had a reasonable belief that Vera-Munoz posed an immediate threat of serious physical harm or death."
