Overview

A Travis County Jail inmate rushed to the hospital Monday morning after being found in critical condition later died at the hospital, officials said in a press advisory.

Citing recent passage of the Sandra Bland Act, the Travis County Sheriff's Office has asked the Texas Rangers to conduct an investigation into the death. The deceased was identified as Herman Titus, 21, of Austin. Sheriff's officials said he was transported by EMS to South Austin Hospital in critical condition before dying shortly after his arrival.

Detectives with the Internal Affairs and Major Crimes units of the Travis County Sheriff’s Office are actively investigating the death on their own. Yet officials said evidence collected thus far does not suggest foul play was involved in the inmate's death.

The cause of death will be released once the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office concludes its investigation, TCSO officials said. Titus originally was booked into the Travis County Jail on May 23, charged with intoxication assault and a parole violation.
