Overview

George Zapata was shot in the Oak Cliff neightborhood of Dallas, Texas

Legal Action

Dallas police say a gunman who moments earlier had fatally shot a man was himself killed by an officer who was in the area responding to a separate call.

The unidentified officer was in plain clothes Friday evening investigating a property crime when he heard nearby gunfire.

The officer confronted the gunman, later identified by authorities as 24-year-old George Zapata, and exchanged gunfire with him.

Zapata died in the exchange and the officer was injured. Deputy Chief Thomas Castro declined to say whether the officer was struck by gunfire or injured in some other way. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and later released.

Authorities say Zapata also shot a second man, who was listed in stable condition.
