Overview

The Statesboro Police Department was involved in a shooting on Rackley Street on 10/28/2013 at approximately 9:30am.

A Statesboro Police Officer and a City of Statesboro Code Enforcement Officer responded to 315 Rackley Street in reference to a civil dispute and a call for service from a citizen on an adjacent property related to a city ordinance violation. While at the residence, shots were fired.  The suspect and resident of 315 Rackley, George Pryor, 61 years old, was confirmed deceased at the scene.  Pryor did have a firearm at the time of the incident.

A friend of Pryor’s said police and a city code enforcement officer were there to remove a junk van that had been in his front yard for more than a decade. Trees had grown up around the van and the city wanted it moved because of a code violation.

A tow truck and police showed up to move the van, and that’s when Rose Roberts, Pryor’s friend, said the confrontation began.

“For some reason, the marshal cam yesterday morning,” she said. “That was 9:20 [a.m.], I looked at my watch. He signed the papers, went back into the house. Then 9:30-9:45 [a.m.], excuse my expression but all hell broke loose.”

Rose Roberts, who lives nearby, said that city officials had been asking for years that Pryor move an old van from his front yard. She said the van had a lot of sentimental value, and he wanted to get it fixed.
