Overview

27 year-old Essence Bowman was fleeing from Sulphur police officers, ran into traffic on U.S. 90, was hit by a car and killed, authorities said.

Lewis Coats, Sulphur police chief, said the incident began about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, when officers were called to the Pelican Motel in the 2600 block of East Napoleon Street (U.S. 90) for a disturbance. During the investigation, Bowman - one of the suspects involved - was detained by officers. But she escaped custody, ran from officers and ran into the road, Coats said.

Bowman was transported to West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her body was turned over to the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office.

According to the officers' account, which was reported by WAFB in Baton Rouge, Bowman somehow escaped custody and ran into the street, where she was struck and killed by a car.

Bowman was transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Now this is where things go awry: Exactly how did she get out of a police cruiser, especially if she was intoxicated ... and restrained? Also, how did the police not notify the family instead of the hospital?
